National Marketing Day: Celebrating Our Field

Today we celebrate National Marketing Day! It is estimated that the average person sees 5,000 advertisements every day. Advertisements are a big part of our entertainment and socialization as a culture. At Media Venue, marketing is what we do best!

History of Marketing

Marketing has been around in small ways since the beginning of time. However, marketing through advertisements as we know them began in the mid- nineteenth century with the industrial revolution. The innovative technologies that allowed mass production impacted marketing because businesses were able to supply a larger number of products for a lower price.

During the 20th century, businesses began to compete for customers. Businesses began to create advertisements that attempted to be more eye-catching than their competitors. Slowly marketing transformed into what it is today. Marketing is no longer the occasional poster or radio ad; It is built into everything we see around us. Chances are, you can stay exactly where you are and see more than a dozen advertisements around you.

Marketing in the Real World

Over the years, thousands of marketing campaigns have emerged. Some of these marketing campaigns have not just been successful but have been truly iconic. These strategies have skyrocketed sales and impacted a generation. Chances are, you have heard of some of the following campaigns.

Nike’s “Just Do It’ Campaign

Nike launched this campaign in 1988. It featured athletes, both amateur and professional, who inspired others by sharing what they had accomplished. The tagline “Just Do It” inspired thousands of people to take chances. Nike succeeded in emotionally connecting with the public and motivating them to pursue their dreams.

Snickers’ “You’re Not You When You’re Hungry” Campaign

This campaign featured different kinds of celebrities- including Betty White! The celebrities would play people distressed over their hunger and acting in humorous ways. This comedic campaign showed that a Snickers bar is the perfect solution for when you are “hangry.” It was realistic and relatable.

Coca-Cola’s “Share a Coke” Campaign

During the middle of a scorching summer, Coca-Cola started encouraging others to share cokes by printing names and titles on their drinks. This campaign originally began in Australia and soon moved to a world-wide level. Coca-Cola was focusing on personalization and connection.

California Milk Processor Board’s “Got Milk” Campaign

The California Milk Processor Board created this iconic campaign in 1993 during a focus group that required the participants to not drink milk for a week prior to the discussion. The tagline “Got Milk?” came to be because of the distress felt by many people who had experienced a week without a beverage considered vital. This campaign was so popular that its tagline has become part of pop culture and is referenced often in entertainment and advertisements of all kinds.
