Women in the Marketing Industry: Celebrating National Women’s History Month

Marketing is an ever- evolving industry with various influences. Technology updates, marketing restructuring and agencies, and currently artificial intelligence, have all made lasting impressions on the advertising field we have today. These aren’t the only things that have created change within the field—So have iconic women in the industry that have changed the marketing field forever.

Notable Women in Advertising History

There are thousands of professionals in the marketing industry across the globe. While there are countless women that impact this field every day, there are a few that stand out among the rest.

Mathilde C. Weil

Weil was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1800s, where she started her marketing career. She originally worked as a translator but her natural gifts for creativity and writing garnered attention, leading her to begin her writing and advertising career. She started writing for print media and started buying media space and ultimately opened her own agency. The M.C. Weil Agency was the first ad agency to be female- led in New York. This is how she became known as the industry’s first “ad woman.”

 Estee Lauder

Lauder’s success wasn’t only in cosmetics—It was also in advertising. She started her career as a young girl working at her father’s hardware store and her uncle’s laboratory. In 1946, she utilized her business experience and launched her own company that is still well known today. Her cosmetic success can be attributed to her innovative marketing. These innovative strategies include free samples and “Tell- A- Woman” word of mouth advertising.

Louise McNamee

McNamee utilized her knowledge and skills to climb the corporate ladder at Della Femina, a well-known New York advertising agency in the 1980s. She became the leader at Della Femina, making her the first woman to be chosen to lead an established advertising agency. She later became a partner at MVBMS, where she became the first women to “helm a global advertising agency.”
